5 Winter Coats you Need in Your Wardrobe
By: Zoey Woldman
Let’s be honest, Mother Nature has spoiled us New Yorkers this season. With the exception of a few chilly days here and there, the weather has remained pretty mild. Even though we don’t want to face it, the cold can’t hold out much longer. Where there’s cold weather, there’s warm clothing... That’s right! It’s officially coat season! At Making it in Manhattan, we don’t want you to have to compromise your #look just to stay warm, so we’ve put together a list of fashion girl approved, cute (but essential) coats that you need this winter! Grab a pen and a piece of paper (or just the notes app on your phone) because it’s time to make your shopping list!
The Puffer Coat
Thanks to Asap Rocky and Rihanna, the puffer trend is even stronger now than years past. The ever popular puffer coat is back, and it’s bold. Available in pretty much every color under the sun, the puffer coat is perfect to top any casual look. If neutral if your thing, make like RiRi, and go for a simple black puffer, but if you’re feeling daring, go with a bright color like Asap’s fave, orange.

The Topcoat
The topcoat is a classic, no debate. The sophisticated style of the popular 40s coat elevates any look. With a nod to menswear, the boxy, simple silhouette looks good on every body type, and over just about any outfit.

(Faux) Fur Coat
The fur coat is just plain out pretty. It adds a feminine flare to any look, casual or formal, and shows that you’re not afraid to have fun with your clothing. If fur isn’t for you, opt for a faux fur coat that gives off the same fun vibe.

Statement Coat
Everyone needs a statement coat, the I-know-I’m-going-to-stand-out coat. Don’t worry. Everyone will be staring at you in a good way. Honestly, who cares what you’re wearing under it? That’s not the point. The coat is the whole look!

The Trench Coat
Like the topcoat, the trench has been around for decades. Originally worn by Army officers during the early 1900’s, the trench coat was later adapted into a protective, waterproof coat for soldiers in the trenches during World War I. Now, it serves as a professional outerwear piece. As one of the most feminine, waist cinching styles of coats out there, it’s pretty hard to believe it was first created for men!
