They say beauty is only skin deep, and while skincare is necessary to look beautiful, there is much more to it than what meets the eye. To this day, inventions are being designed and released to measure the health of the skin, in addition to just its look.

In fact, dermatology is a branch of science that deals with issues and concerns relating to skin health, and those who are enthusiastic about keeping their skin health in a top-notch condition know that it is quite an exhaustive ordeal.

According to a recent study by Gal-derma, by 2020, there will be 1 billion people over 60 years old who will face skin deterioration as a result of the natural aging process. Around 1.5 billion people between 15 to 45 years old will suffer from acne. Furthermore, there are more than 3,000 or more skin diseases, and one in every three cancers diagnosed is skin cancer. Moreover, one in every ten people in the world suffers from rosacea while this can vary by region. Basically, this all means skin health is a pretty common concern among our community and taking care of it needs to be at the top of our to-do list.

In light of this information, let’s take a quick look at some of the best habits to achieve great skin.

Healthy Diet for Nourishment

Believe it or not, but a daily diet can evidently impact the health of the skin as well as lead to adverse effects if not monitored. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining skin health, and these can be found in fish which can reduce inflammation, fight back acne, and reduce redness. Next up, there are avocados which are rich in healthy fats as well.

Eating avocados can help people in obtaining a supple and springy skin. Both fish and avocados are good sources of vitamin E as well. Red and yellow bell peppers are excellent sources of vitamin C which are required for creating protein collagen to keep skin firm and strong. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from the damages caused by the sun and the environment.

Keeping Skin Clean

Keeping the skin clean and healthy is a must. Also, it means that there is a need to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 to protect it from the sun. Then there comes light and gentle treatments such as a short warm bath as longer and hotter baths remove essential oils from the skin. Same goes with overdrying or chemical-filled soaps as they must be avoided, especially those with intense compositions, in preference to mild cleansers.

People with excellent skin pat dry the skin to keep moisture for a longer period. Also, they minimize makeup time and maximize exfoliation. It is the process involving the removal of dead skin cells from the surface and if not cleaned properly can cause clogged pores and create calluses.

Some great options for exfoliation of the skin include: almonds, baking soda, cinnamon, coffee grounds, finely ground sugar, green tea, honey, oatmeal, and sea salt, to name a few. Plus, there are various recipes of DIY and custom all-natural exfoliators available online.

Plenty of Hydration

The skin needs to be hydrated to remain healthy. If the skin becomes dehydrated, it will appear dull, dry, and flaky. Hydrated skins are smooth, have an even tone, and radiant. First and foremost, drinking an adequate amount of water can hydrate your skin

People drink at least eight glasses of water per day, as recommended. And according to individual needs, more water intake may be required. There are also tons of water-based creams and hydrating skincare products available. These include ingredients like hyaluronic acid (prevents aging and replenishes the skin), glycerin (a humectant), and ceramides (repairs skin), naming a few.

Moisturizers & Supplements

While there is a considerable list of commercially available moisturizers, there are several natural remedies that are, in fact, marvelous in their own right. These include Aloe Vera, almond oil, coconut oil, honey, olive oil, papaya, and yogurt.

Along with moisturizers, supplements like Vitamin C, E, and D, along with healthy fatty acids such as omega-3s and omega-6s are ideal. Other supplements also include zinc and selenium. Vitamin E offers protection from the sun’s UV rays. Zinc speeds up the healing process after an injury and selenium boost protection from the sun. Vitamin D is undoubtedly one of the most common nutrients required as a building block for the skin.

Routine Based Workouts

Exercise on a routine basis helps increase blood flow throughout the body, removes toxins, and nourishes the skin cells. Through exercise, one can also remove waste and free radicals from working cells. In fact, there are many yoga counterparts available for making the skin glow as well.

However, when doing exercise, it is essential that one must cleanse their face before a workout and never wait to wash up after the workout is over, as well. Never wear makeup before starting an exercise routine as it can lead to some severe complications.

Sleep Matters a Lot

The majority amongst us must have heard about the phrase ‘time to catch up on some beauty sleep’, and it couldn’t be any more honest and closer to the truth. Sleeping well increases blood flow, allows organs to build collagen, and repair damages such as from UV (ultraviolet) exposure, as well as reduce aging spots and wrinkles.

Deprivation of sleep, on the other hand, can result in swollen eyes, hanging eyelids, paler skin, and darker under-eye circles, droopy corners of the mouth, and more fine lines as well as wrinkles. Don’t forget an overnight moisturizer and place a glass of water nearby.
