By: Karli Poliziani
The retail industry is constantly changing and can, quite frankly, be hard to keep up with. From trends coming and going, to COVID-19 changing the future of retail, there is always something new happening. That is why we’ve created a list of our top ways to stay in the know on all things fashion. Whether you are sitting at home or running late to a meeting, we’ve got you covered with our go-to retail resources.
Scrolling Through Instagram: WGSN
At MIIM, we understand the importance of Instagram for the retail industry in a world with an ever-growing social media presence. Instagram is the easiest way to stay up to date on fashion trends and news because of its ability to reach its audience quickly and effectively. As a society, we are drawn to intriguing images and concise captions that can maintain our interest while providing us with the information we are looking for. That is why @WGSN is one of our favorite handles to follow for all things fashion.
WGSN is a trend forecasting company that provides readers from across the globe with insights and inspiration. Their Instagram is packed with runway recaps, emerging trends, updates from leading experts in the field, and more. Their fashion feed editors created #FeedFridays to give their followers industry and trend updates every Friday, in addition to their daily content. Be sure to give them a follow for your daily dose of fashion.
On the Go App: BoF Professional
In addition to Instagram, we love a good app that is easy to navigate and sends you notifications on the information that’s most important to you. The Business of Fashion Professional app is a must for anyone working in retail looking to keep up with the latest fashion news from brand launches, to designer mishaps, to job openings around the world. This app provides you with daily and weekly briefings, as well as real-time breaking news alerts so that you are always in the know.
The BoF Professional app is an extension of the BoF website. BoF is a community for fashion that combines journalism with professional development. Their site offers you the ability to browse for free, or gain additional resources by subscribing to their Professional account. The BoF Professional app is currently only available for Professional subscribers. If you are new to BoF, you can try BoF Professional for 30 days for only $1 a day. You can find more information about their membership subscriptions here.
Your Commute Podcast: unEDITED: Inside Retail
We understand that life can get pretty busy, which is why we love listening to podcasts when we are out and about without the ability to scroll on our phones. One of our top recommended fashion podcasts is unEDITED: Inside Retail. This podcast is hosted by fashion experts Grace Hill and Vicky Giles, and explores the opportunities and challenges the retail industry is facing. Each episode features an expert in the field to discuss industry topics and share advice on how retailers can create a brighter future.
The unEDITED podcast is an extension of EDITED, an A.I. driven retail data, analytics, and research company. Their work helps the world’s top retailers drive sales and increase margins. The EDITED team is composed of engineers, data scientists, and retail strategists who bring new insights to the retail market. Their podcast offers a unique point of view on current retail events with insights from CEOs, directors, editors, and VPs alike.
At-Home Browsing: Making it in Manhattan
Despite living in an “always-on” world, 2020 has shown us the importance of taking a break and enjoying time doing the things that we love. Here at MIIM, our favorite lunch-break entertainment and rainy day activity is browsing online for the latest and greatest fashion updates. MakingManhattan.com offers a personalized viewpoint on how to take all of the retail news and trends that are happening and apply them directly to your own life and style. Under the shopping & style vertical you can find what colors to check out this season, black-owned fashion and beauty brands you can support, how changes in the fashion industry could affect the future of retail, and more. Most articles feature direct links to send you to the exact page or product the writer is telling you about, so you can support that small business you just learned about immediately after reading the article.
Making it in Manhattan the site was created by Caroline Vazzana after writing Making it in Manhattan the book. This site features articles and interviews on a range of subjects including career advice, shopping & style, beauty, and lifestyle. It was created for fashion hopefuls to learn how to make it in the fashion industry, and for all who strive for more in their life, career, and wardrobe.
