Movies to Watch for Silver Screen-Worthy Style this Summer
By: Aaron Royce
Movies would be amiss without costumes, but the best films transcend this with true style. Costume styling can connect to current trends and iconic fashion moments all while becoming major outfit inspiration. Aesthetics, individual characters and specific pieces—or sometimes, all three!—can all be blueprints for your future looks.
As summer reaches its peak, we’ve been looking back on the season’s best movies for inspiration. Whether they’re laugh-out-loud comedies or semi-serious dramas, all the films we love have one thing in common: style. From glamorous socialites to legitimate royalty, their characters are fashionable from head to heels—and aren’t afraid to show it. Browse our list, then binge Netflix ASAP for instant summer style inspiration!
The Bling Ring
This drama chronicles one of the most outlandish real-life fashion scandals of the century when LA teens known as The Bling Ring stole clothing, bags, and accessories from celebrities like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. Though justice was served, we can’t overlook the stylish ensembles from members like Nicki (Emma Watson) and Rebecca (Katie Chang). From studded dresses to Juicy sweatsuits, their signature oversized sunglasses are an undeniably fierce staple. Donning a pair all summer will ensure a movie star-worthy look.
The Great Gatsby
A little party never killed nobody—but any look is sure to slay if you’re taking inspiration from The Great Gatsby! The 2013 drama’s renowned story is beautifully shown on screen, especially from fashionable socialite Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). From colorful silk and sequined dresses to piles of jewelry, she’s always making a glamorous statement. Wearing party-worthy pearls like Daisy’s is a surefire step towards a stylish summer!
Sex and the City
How could we not include one of our favorite movies of all time? Outfitted by the namesake show’s costume designer (and fashion fairy godmother) Patricia Field, this movie follows Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda as they help each other through major life changes. The film’s costumes were especially enchanting, combining pieces from a range of designers for an aesthetic that’s glamorous and modern. Carrie and Miranda’s looks especially evolved from the show, featuring new brands like Proenza Schouler and SATC classics like Dior. Of course, one constant is Carrie’s love for Manolo Blahnik, which plays an integral role in the film with it’s now-iconic Hangisi pumps. Since Hangisis are pretty pricey, we recommend bringing your outfits a ‘Carrie’ twist with any pair of statement heels!
A Simple Favor
We couldn’t tell you what we loved most about this stylish thriller: Anna Kendrick’s colorful and quirky outfits, Blake Lively’s sharp fashionista looks, or its juicy plot! Of course, we knew the film was stylish before it even started, thanks to a fabulous NYFW premiere. It coincidentally premiered as bold suiting became a major fashion trend, inspiring everyone to unleash their dapper side in new ways. Whether dressed up a la Lively’s character Emily—and her collection of Louboutins—or down, it’s clear that female suiting has never been the same since. Add some Simple Favor flair to your next look by suiting up with a full three-piece, or any blazer that’s printed, colorful or just brings your outfit extra drama.
The Other Woman
We love this comedy starring Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and Kate Hudson for its costumes as much as its laugh-out-loud moments. Released at the peak of 2010’s contemporary style, designer Paolo Nieddu made great use of chic pieces by Martin Grant, Balenciaga and Celine for Carly (Diaz)’s on-screen looks. As a stylish lawyer who uncovers a secret about her boyfriend—then plots hilarious revenge—Carly’s outfits were bold, versatile and super trendy. And since the film takes place in New York during the summertime, what better way to draw inspiration for perfect looks this season? We recommend a versatile tank dress, plus your favorite shoes and accessories, for easy styling.
Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette —another movie by Sophia Coppola—is every bit as decadent and fabulous as you’d expect. The film portrays the reign of French teen-queen Marie Antoinette (Kirsten Dunst) with touches of rock‘n’roll. The Oscar-winning costumes are as lavish and over-the-top as Marie herself. Though we can’t dress in full skirts with corsets and mile-high wigs—unless that’s your thing—everyone can add a little glamour to their everyday looks with jewelry. The accessories in Marie Antoinette look modern and vintage, adding a burst of extra sparkle in every outfit. Try a pair of similar statement earrings for a glitzy style moment that’s fit for a queen. Add a flowing skirt, your favorite lipstick and a glass of bubbly to feel utterly royal this summer.
Almost Famous
Almost Famous has tons of funky style from its 70s setting, but nobody has more flair in the film than Penny Lane (Kate Hudson). Thanks to her boho outfits, Penny’s mix of casual and vintage pieces are perfect for summer and establish her as an on-screen style icon. With a penchant for thrift-worthy looks, pieces like faux fur coats and suede skirts from Penny’s wardrobe are stylish and approachable. Her casual style is perfect for summertime, which you can easily replicate with any crop top or camisole in a bold color or print. Toss on some sunglasses and your favorite denim for a seriously groovy getup!
