5 Tips on How to Add More Color to Your Wardrobe
By: Catie Pusateri
Although an all-black outfit never goes out of style, it’s easy to find yourself avoiding bright colors or statement patterns for a safer choice like black and other neutrals. Statement patterns inherently stand out from the crowd and bright colors make any outfit unique, but stepping outside of the expected can be somewhat nerve-wracking. But, experimenting with your style will help you find what you feel powerful in, so don’t be afraid to venture into neons, bold patterns, or even jewel tones, too. For those interested in upgrading their wardrobe to include more daring pieces, this article is for you. Ahead, you’ll find our tips for trying out a bold wardrobe.
Start Small
If you are just beginning to expand your fashion game, try looking for inspiration on Instagram, Pinterest, and out on the city streets. While it may feel overwhelming to shift your style, starting small can help you become more comfortable with stepping outside of your comfort zone. If your wardrobe is filled with dark colors, try starting with a darker shade of a color you like, such as a darker green or blue to ease into wearing more colors. This could be anything from a shirt to a pair of shoes, but all that counts is that you’ve started the journey to more colorful clothes.
Pop of Color
When crafting your outfit, try accessorizing with one color or similar shades of one color to dip your toe into more colorful styles. Finding the perfect bright purse is a quick and stylish way to add a burst of color to any outfit, and it can draw eyes for all the right reasons. Matching multiple accessories such as a neck scarf, headpiece, or a belt with the same color scheme or a complementary color is also a simple way to incorporate more color.
Start with a Statement
One statement pattern can carry an outfit, whether it takes the form of a dress, shirt, skirt, pants, or anything in between. This could be a classic pattern such as stripes or polka dots, or you could venture into brighter patterns such as florals or a wavy ‘70s moment. No matter what pattern you choose to rock, always wear it with confidence.
Monochromatic Outfit
Another way to wear bold colors is to go all in and sport a full monochromatic outfit with one color. While you don’t have to wear hot pink, you could try wearing one whole color to truly push yourself out of your comfort zone. Although this may seem simple, it can be an exciting pop of color amongst a sea of gray suits.
Mix patterns
If you weren’t scared before, now let’s talk about mixing patterns. On the surface, this may seem like a ‘fashion don’t’, but mixing patterns is a great way to stand out and rock a uniquely vibrant outfit. When putting together the outfit, still look for which pattern will function as your statement pattern. Then try pairing a classic pattern such as stripes or plaid with that statement pattern to balance it out. Similar colors within the patterns will make the outfit flow.
