Fashion Grandma’s Are Taking Over The Internet

You’re never too old become an influencer; amongst the thousands of people showcasing their style on social media, there are also some seriously stylish elder ladies that have become fashion influencers and these fabulous older ladies are otherwise known as ‘fashion grandma’s.’
One could argue that Ari Seth Cohen is responsible for introducing the world to unbelievably stylish elder women in his documentary ‘Advanced Style’. In ‘Advanced Style’, we saw ladies aged from 60 to 95 explain how they use fashion to express themselves and how it plays an important role in their lifestyle.
In 2019, a group of four women all aged over 60 gained popularity after a 15 second clip of them walking in Beijing’s shopping district got over 50 million views. This group named themselves Glamma Beijing and started making videos showcasing their outfits on Chinese video sharing platform Douyin as well as a TikTok account called @fashion_grannies that now has over 500,000 followers.
Chinese grandma’s are also gaining attention for their eclectic style right here in North America. An instagram called @chinatownpretty documents stylish Chinese grandma’s from Chinatowns across North America. These ladies are not afraid of wearing bright colors, mix patterns and wear different textures, proving that age really is just a number and doesn’t define what you wear. Here at Making it in Manhattan we’ve gathered a list of five fashionable elderly ladies you can take inspiration from whenever you’re stuck on what to wear.
Jenny Maragaret Kee
Jenny Maragaret Kee is a 74 year old Australian fashion designer whose had her pieces featured in museums and magazines like Vogue Italia and Women’s Wear Daily. She combines her love of art into the clothing she makes and has been awarded for her exquisite work.
Arlinda McIntosh is the founder and creative director of her own clothing line called Sofistafunk. She is a stylist and fashion designer who creates one-of-a-king zero waste skirts. You can check her out on Instagram where she documents her outfits and new designs.
Karina Vigier is a magazine editor in her fifties living in Copenhagen. She posts fun dancing videos and vlogs on Tik Tok all while showcasing her unique style. Her videos are a joy to watch and many others agree as she has over 350,000 TikTok followers.
Dorrie Jacobson is an 86 year old former Playboy Bunny, makeup artist, and model. She runs a blog called Senior Style Bible where she writes about beauty, fashion, wellness, and travel, sharing the best tips and tricks for mature women.
Grace Ghenam is a former microbiologist who has over 600,000 Instagram followers and became a fashion influencer by accident. After using her daughters Instagram account to constantly see what people were wearing, her daughter encouraged her start her own account. Once she started her page, her daughter started taking pictures of her outfits and posting them. Long story short, she started gaining attention on the app for her chic style and became a model, too.
